Getting Started in Security 51

Your first shifts at the Area 51 elevator checkpoint — without panic.

Getting Started

Security 51 is available on Steam August 12, 2026 from Alawar, blending Papers, Please document loops with SCP-style paranoia at an underground elevator checkpoint. You are not exploring the facility — you are the gate. Every person who approaches carries papers, verbal orders, or both, and your job is to decide who may descend into classified levels and who must be turned away before the shaft swallows another mistake.

This getting started guide assumes you are on Windows or macOS via Steam (App ID 4246860). A free demo (App ID 4351470) covers early shifts and is the safest way to learn before buying. There are no promo codes or Roblox-style cheats; skill at reading bulletins beats any shortcut.

Before you press Start Day

Alawar added a Start Day button so the shift clock does not run while you read instructions. Use it every morning. Open the bulletin, note special rules — passport mismatches, photo requirements, medical certificate changes — and skim yesterday’s mistakes if the game surfaces them. Our Document Verification guide explains each field once paperwork arrives.

Your desk is intentionally cramped: documents on the left, comparison tools center, elevator controls to the right. Learn mouse targets before visitors queue. If you prefer gamepad, see Controller Controls after you understand the mouse flow in Keyboard and Mouse.

First-shift goals

Day one is about rhythm, not perfection. Verify name against passport and facility pass, check ID numbers match across documents, compare photos, and confirm clearance level and time windows against the manual. Deny when anything conflicts — mercy without evidence is how anomalies slip below.

Watch bodies, not only ink. Spotting Anomalies covers rashes, slurred speech, and posture before X-ray unlocks. Count people entering and leaving the elevator; Elevator Headcount explains empty-camera events and duplicate staff rising from the depths.

Money and sanity matter early. Food is expensive and the sanity bar drains when you hesitate or witness wrongness. Budget upgrades carefully using Sanity and Supplies so you can afford X-ray when it appears in X-Ray Scanning.

Escalation timeline (full game)

Early shifts emphasize paperwork and behavior. Mid shifts introduce fingerprint readers and blood tests — see Fingerprint and Blood Tests. When doubt remains, quarantine may be safer than denial; Quarantine Protocol covers detention trade-offs and titanium-cell consequences that surface shifts later.

Some mistakes punish immediately — a guard drag, a reprimand, lost pay. Others wait. An employee you sent home may return from below with identical papers. A car that cameras label empty may open with someone standing inside. Security 51 rewards memory across shifts, not single-transaction cleverness.

Demo vs full release

The demo stops before the deepest horror layers. Our Demo vs Full Game page lists what carries over and what requires the paid build. For shift-by-shift routing, follow Early Shifts Walkthrough after your first successful day.

  1. Document Verification — field-by-field checks
  2. Spotting Anomalies — body and behavior flags
  3. Elevator Headcount — counting and camera lies
  4. Sanity and Supplies — food and upgrades
  5. Later: X-Ray Scanning, Fingerprint and Blood Tests, Quarantine Protocol

Use the Verification Checklist on a second monitor or phone during real shifts. When launch patches change bulletins, check Launch Patch Notes before trusting old habits.

Security 51 is single-player only — no single-player only to split attention. Your checkpoint is the whole game. Treat each visitor as a puzzle where the wrong answer might not scream until three shifts later. Start Day, breathe, read the bulletin, then let the first passport slide across the glass.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What should I do first in Security 51?

Read the daily bulletin without starting the clock, then verify each visitor's documents against the manual before allowing elevator access.

Is there a tutorial in Security 51?

Yes. Early shifts introduce document fields gradually, including fake medical certificates and photo mismatches. The demo covers this onboarding.

Does Security 51 have codes or cheats?

Can I pause before a shift starts?

Use the Start Day button to review instructions first. The shift timer begins only when you confirm you are ready.

What platforms support Security 51?
